Nathan Farnell said council envisioned a two stage process for Kooyoo Street.

The first would look to make Kooyoo Street more appealing with street trees, quality paving and seating.

The second stage would look to seek temporarily closure of the street for markets, events and festivals.

“The first stage would be getting decent trees and seating and then possibly build it up to a shared area with shaded market facilities,” Mr Farnell said.

“At the moment the planting of street trees are a major focus.

“The idea would be for Kooyoo Street to be blocked off on a temporary basis.”

The Kooyoo Street markets would open on the weekend and could be a totally new set of markets for Griffith that would rival the Rotary markets.

“I know the Rotary markets themselves wouldn't be happy with that idea (to move to Kooyoo Street) they want an indoor market,” Mr Farnell said when asked if the Rotary markets would potenitally occupy Kooyoo Street.

“There would be a number of different ideas on ways to have markets in an outdoor location.

“It would be great for visitors to walk along our main street and be drawn down Kooyoo Street by the fresh produce on sale in a vibrant market.”

Kooyoo Street is considered an important north-south connection between Banna Avenue and the rest of the city centre.

If people were drawn down Kooyoo Street, they would then be led towards a revamped Yambil Street.

The side street is mainly home to non-hospitality businesses.

The Griff Hotel and Kebab Palace are the only two businesses that serve food and drink down the street.

The potential of more pedestrians travelling through would lend itself to hospitality businesses but not so much the others.

“We envisage that the redevelopment would assist business in the precinct with greater foot traffic, particularly as people are drawn to walk down a more attractive and welcoming street that is connected to services, activities and amenity,” Mr Farnell said.

“Those businesses could capitalise on this, the question is, are they the best businesses to have there?

“It would be great to have more retail and more cafes down Kooyoo Street.”

So far the idea has received a large amount of support on The Area News Facebook page.

Many followers have backed the  Kooyoo Street revamp calling it a great idea.
