Despite the top five being out of reach before kick-off, the Hawks played like their season was still alive to beat one of the premiership contenders.
Yanco-Wamoon trailed 10-0 early but a decision to attack Black and Whites on the fringes reaped big dividends in the second half.
Hawks coach Simon Watson said the performance revealed a lot about his players.
“The boys could have turned up stumps today,” he said.
“There’s pride in the guernsey, that’s for sure.
“To be 10-nil down, we could have thought, ‘Bugger this’.
“But the boys showed their character. It was pretty pleasing.”
Sunday’s result left the Hawks seventh on the ladder, while Black and Whites dropped from second to fourth.
They will play Yenda in an elimination final in the first weekend of the playoffs.
