Allan Jones broke through for his maiden victory in the long course in a time of 53mins 33sec. Jones was clearly chuffed with the result, saying: “It only took me seven years to do it”.
Jones grabbed the lead from Bob Barker in the finishing chute, with Barker settling for second place in 53.42.
Adam Johnson impressed by setting the fastest time for the competition with a slick 30.15 to claim third.
He finished five seconds in front of Anna Gesuale (53.50), while Vince Restagno was a further three seconds back in fifth after improving on his previous outing to post the day’s second-best time of 31.23.
Derek Goullett was the third quickest, covering the distance in 33.48, but he could only manage 12th overall.
John Keenan has surrendered the competition lead once more, this time to Janelle Toole, whose sixth placing on Saturday gave her a one-point advantage on top of the standings.
It was Toole’s fifth consecutive top-10 finish since being disqualified in the Solstice Cup in June, but the trophy is still anyone’s, with Johnson, Restagno, Barker and Lucia Vernon in the hunt.
In the short course, Jiordan Wallace Chapman made it two in a row with Saturday’s victory. Jiordan’s time of 22.46 saw her home almost a minute ahead of Cooper Savage (22.36), with Dave Gilbert (23.49) in third. Aiden Peruzzi was 10th overall but was quickest on the day, covering the 3.1km course in 14.33.
Emily Adamson leads in the overall standings by a point from Adrian Beard. Finnan O’Conner leapfrogged the absent Chaise Sergi into third, while Ella Savage is still in contention sitting in fifth.
City2Surf will attract many joggers away from Scenic Hill this week, which will introduce another variable into the unpredictable long and short course competitions.
