The Mallee Men scored five tries to three, centre Chris Mayberry bagging a double in the round 14 clash.
West Wyalong coach Rohan Loudon said his side was fortunate to come away with the win.
“They (Yanco-Wamoon) are a very good side. We were pretty lucky to win today,” he said.
“There’s nothing between the top seven or eight sides in the competition, I think. It’s that close at the moment.
“We play two desperate sides in the next two weeks (Yenda and Waratahs), and Yanco were desperate out there today.”
Yanco-Wamoon coach Simon Watson said it was a game his team could have won if not for a couple of late disallowed tries.
“I thought we were very unlucky,” a frustrated Watson said.
“I think there would have been a fair few West Wyalong supporters there who would’ve thought we should’ve had some of those decisions go our way.
“It’s a bit hard to take because now we have to rely on other results to make the finals.”
Next up for the Hawks is a home clash against fellow finals aspirants the Hay Magpies.
