District Governor Gary Roberts was in attendance – his first visit as District Governor.
It was always going to be a special night and to coincide with the Governors visit the club decided it would be the appropriate time to surprise Major Karen Smith and present her award.
A PHF is the highest honour Rotary can bestow on their members or those from outside the club that are seen to have contributed in a special way to the community.
Major Smith is a dedicated and special person that has devoted her life to the betterment of others.
She is a caring individual who is focused and driven with abilities to problem solve on a daily basis, a quality that is so very important when dealing with those families who’s daily lives are a permanent struggle.
Major Smith’s commitment was never more transparent than through the Yenda, Yoogali and Hanwood floods – where she lead the charge seven days of week providing families access to welfare, direction and much needed counselling – an herculean effort that has gone largely unnoticed.
Major Smith continues to play an important and essential role in the community and the reliance on her by those less fortunate then ourselves is testament to the high esteem in which she is held right throughout the area and the importance she plays in so many lives.
Her philosophy of putting all others first ahead of herself along with her empathy, understanding and kindness to each and every one stands her alone in her field.
