Black and Whites co-coach Craig Morriss was happy with the win but said ball handling left much to be desired.
“It was a scrappy game, both sides didn't complete a lot of sets,” Morriss said.
“We went in there a bit underdone with a couple guys that were out.
“The guys that came from ressies and sat on the bench, they all stepped up. No one was fresh off the bench.
“At the start, we soaked up four or five sets in a row, which I thought was great defence, and then Hay cracked us.”
A James Williams sin-binning late in the game let Hay back into the match but Griffith held on.
The match marked a triumphant return of competition rugby league to Goolgowi.
The day got Morriss’ tick of approval.
“It was a great day for football, a big crowd, good atmosphere,” Morriss said.
“The boys dug deep and it was good day for the club and a great effort by the Goolgowi locals.
“The Black and Whites committee worked hard as well to get everything out there, it was a great win for rugby league.”
