Echo, a two year old girl, has trained for this job nearly her entire life.
Instruction team leader at Assistance Dogs Australia Katie Saran said Echo was ready to head out into the workforce.
“They enter the program at eight weeks of age, as puppies,” she said.
“They're then in the community with a volunteer family until about 12-14 months of age.
“Then they come into advanced training in Sydney at our national training school.
“After all of that we finally decide what career will be best for them.”
She said there were a number of different jobs that the assistance dogs can go into, but were assigned based on the strengths that they showed.
“Assistance Dogs trains dogs for people with physical disabilities, children with autism and also people with PTSD,” she said.
“Based on the strengths of the dog is how we end up lining them up with their job, including as an educational support dog.
“The aim for Echo is to work with Belinda within the school, and with all the students.”
Kalinda School principal Belinda Wallace said Echo will have a busy time ahead of her.
“Echo will work in each classroom with me, with the kids,” she said.
“For some of them it will be providing support because their mobility is limited, others may read to her, and for kids with mental health issues they'll be able to be involved in her care and training.”
She said the kids have eagerly waited for Echo to arrive.
“It's all very exciting and the kids are especially excited,” she said.
“We've had a picture of Echo up in the office for a few weeks now so they can see that and get used to her.
“We're really lucky to have Katie come out and help work with us for these first few days.”
Ms Wallace said there was a lot of thanks to go around.
“Griffith Feed and Grain are providing her with all of her food, Griffith Veterinary Hospital are providing her vet care and the Kalinda P&C paid for her set up costs,” she said.
