Residents will be updated on the council’s Fit for the Future submission.
The meeting will also be a chance for residents to have their say.
Council’s submission, which was lodged at 3.47pm on June 30, was unanimously endorsed by councillors at an Extraordinary meeting of council at Darlington Point on June 29. As part of the executive summary in the submission, Murrumbidgee Shire Council mayor Austin Evans highlighted that council provided “fit for purpose” services to its community while remaining sustainable into the 21st century.
“Our proposal ensures that the Murrumbidgee Shire retains its local community identity and local democracy,” Cr Evans said.
“Rates and charges within Murrumbidgee Shire, compared to other like councils, are at an affordable level and our community has indicated that there is capacity to meet increases through a Special Rate Variation should that be required, therefore making our revenue base even more robust.” Cr Evans said that although the Independent Local Government Review Panel placed council in the “at risk” category, this assumption was made on data that council has demonstrated was poor, in particular with regard to population trends taking during severe drought.
“Our submission demonstrates that council should never have been classified ‘at risk’ and the recommendation for Murrumbidgee Shire should have only been a rural council as part of the Murrumbidgee Joint Organisation,” he said.
The meetings will be held at the Coleambally Bowling Club on Wednesday, July 15 from 6pm to 7.30pm and the Darlington Sports Club on Wednesday, July 22 from 6pm to 7.30pm.
