The Hawks were behind 20-4 at the break before coach Simon Watson and a few of his senior players delivered some home truths after a poor opening 40 minutes.
The Sharks hadn’t won for more than a month heading into the clash, but Watson said his team shouldn’t have underestimated them.
“The Lakes mob turned up ready to play and played well, even though they’re missing four or five players,” he said.
“At half-time there were some serious comments thrown out there in the sheds.
“I think some of the boys thought they (Sharks) were going to be an easy target and they weren’t.”
With his players’ attitude corrected, Watson said the Hawks were far more effective in the second half.
“After 20 minutes, we were in front and we managed to hold on for the win,” he said.
“I was pleased about that and how the boys responded.”
