The naming follows through on a promise made by the Rose Society of NSW to cross-pollinate two roses after Dame Marie’s retirement. The Governor Marie Bashir rose, a cross between Melinda Gainsford and Princess roses, is delicate pink in appearance with a mild fragrance.

A sign of her upbringing, Dame Marie’s Narrandera childhood home is still lined with formal rose gardens.
