The Riverina will receive 60 copies of Red Chocolate Elephants, that will distributed by WINGS of Hope to support services around the region.
Red Chocolate Elephants is a DVD and book educational resource written for children bereaved by suicide.
WINGS of Hope acting president and Beelbangera native Wendy McWilliam said the resource would help break down the barriers associated with suicide.
“Talking to children about suicide is a taboo and this resource helps start some of these difficult conversations,” Ms McWilliam.
“The DVD and book features the voice and art of bereaved children.
“Children really connect into the voices of other children of a similar age, who have a shared experience of losing a loved one to suicide.”
WINGS of Hope secured a grant from the St George Bank Foundation to help fund the production of the books and DVDs that will be given to primary schools, emergency services and community centres.
The charity is one of few organisations founded and run by suicide bereaved people for the bereaved by suicide community.
Ms McWilliam was 26 when she lost her mother, Faye, to suicide in 2004.
“Community support for my family was primarily through the Salvation Army and a close nit of friends in Griffith,” she said.
“I knew about depression but wasn’t aware of mum suffering from it.
“Years after this event, I eventually joined Restoring the Heartbeat of Hope program, which is still being facilitated by Dr Diana Sands.
“The group program supported me with ways to communicate to my family, friends and colleagues about my loss.”
WINGS of Hope’s goal is to reduce harm and isolation amongst others affected by suicide, also known as postvention, which delivers resources and support to loved ones left behind from suicide. The charity depends on volunteers and donations. Head to www.wingsofhope.org.au for more information.
