CareSouth is a non-government organisation that helps out children from newborns up to 18 years.
Out of home care manager for CareSouth, Sheridan McGregor, talked about how there is an ever growing need for foster carers.
“We're currently supporting 37 kids in foster care and the way it works is we might get a request for us to take children and if we have appropriate carers then we do,” she said.
“Unfortunately we don't have enough carers, so that's why we really need more because every week I'd say we get a few requests, and we often can't take them.
“Some workers have four or five children at a time, but then others can just be there for respite and emergency cases.”
Foster carer Aimee Gibbs has opened up her home to children in need since 2007.
She said it was very rewarding to be a foster carer.
“It's always challenging, there's always something new everyday and our thing is if we can give someone something special, even if it's only eight hours, then we've made a difference in some way,” she said.
“To start with I guess you treat them like one of your children's friends, and it's hard to not become very attached, there's some that just melt your heart and you just want to cuddle them.
“You can get attached and sometimes it is hard to say goodbye.”
In her eight years as a foster carer Ms Gibbs has housed a number of children, with different ages and time frames.
“We’ve probably fostered about 50 in my eight years,” she said.
“That ranges from eight hours for respite, while another carer could come and pick them up, to up to 12 months.
“We've had a five day old baby up until a 17 year old and different experiences with different ages.”
Although it may not be sunshine and roses all the time, Ms Gibbs acknowledged the great feeling she’s gotten from doing it.
“The whole experience has been awesome,” she said.
“It's very rewarding, not always easy, and sometimes challenging, but if you want to make a difference it's probably one of the best ways you can do it,” Ms Gibbs said.
