Inspector John Wadsworth of Griffith police said negotiations were under way.
“We believe there is one male inside the premises,” Inspector Wadsworth said.
He said negotiations were continuing and police hoped for a peaceful resolution to the matter.
“Police had reason to speak to him earlier today and as a result of that he’s gone inside and that’s where we’re up to,” Inspector Wadsworth said.
He said it was not known whether there was anyone inside the house, but family members say there is not.
Standard police procedure in this sort of case is to “contain and negotiate” which in this case has involved blocking off the road and restricting access while they talk to the man.
A relative of the man said family members wanted the opportunity to talk to him because they believed it may speed up the process.
They were seen speaking to police at their command post, but it is not known if they had been given that opportunity.
At least 30 uniformed police, a dozen police cars, special tactical units, an ambulance and fire truck are at the scene.
Police from Wagga Wagga, West Wyalong, and Leeton have joined Griffith police on the scene.
Neighbouring residents are watching the events unfold, with one describing it as “something you’d see in Sydney.”
