It was City that had the early opportunity to take the lead after Andrea Rossi was taken down in the box.
But it wasn’t to be, Wests keeper Mitchell Woods picking the right way to dive before saving the shot.
Woods’ heroics seemed to spark Wests, who quickly took over the game.
Wests player Dean Cappello saw an opening after a teammate’s shot was saved, but not cleared, and slotted the ball home.
The next 15 minutes seemed to belong to City, but they couldn’t find the back of the net.
This eventually came back to haunt them after Wests were able to get their second of the day off the boot of Karim Moursi against the run of play.
With the halftime break looming, City looked to their bench for a spark.
Only five minutes after his arrival on the field, Pat Rose delivered the goods following a perfect through ball from teammate Andrea Rossi that left him one on one with Woods.
A little nudge around the keeper was all Rose needed to make sure City was only a goal down at halftime.
Both teams came out sluggish after the break, tired from a fast-paced first half.
But it was Wests that maintained the majority of possession and looked the more threatening.
Wests substitute Luke Rimmer scored a cracker of a goal after firing the ball into the top left corner from 20 yards out to put his side up 3-1.
With the game all but over, Wests rubbed salt into the wound when Steven Zalunardo added one last goal right before the final whistle.
Wests coach Sharif Moursi was happy with the performance his boys put in.
“We knew it was going to be a tough challenge, tough game, and they definitely gave it to us, but in the end I thought the scoreline was a fair result,” he said.
“We use our wing backs pretty good, we play possession football, and the boys did it very well today.
“The early penalty was a bit of heart attack material, and it would have been a different result had they got that early goal, but we didn't panic at any stage, so we’re happy.”
