“We have recorded a 6 per cent swing from 2011 but we expected more than that,” Mr Buljubasic said.
“The new seat of Murray is obviously very conservative. One of the problems I faced with an experienced candidate with a big budget.”
Mr Buljubasic said independent candidate Helen Dalton had also proved a popular choice, recording the highest number of votes at polling booths in Hanwood and Yenda.
"We faced two very strong candidates,” he said. “All I can say is the Nationals brand is very strong in the region. The one good think that happened is it’s no longer a safe Nationals seat.”
He said he hoped that would result in more funding for infrastructure.
Mr Buljubasic said he had not decided if he would continue to pursue a career in politics.
“It's a bit too early, I’ll have a break and I might be running again,” he said.
