Narrow loss ends Swans’ year

GRIFFITH goal attack Sarah Hart had the unenviable task of making a shot from the top of the circle after the final siren to send her C grade elimination final into extra-time yesterday against Narrandera.

But with the shot missing by the barest of margins, it spelled the end of her side's Riverina Football and Netball League season, as they fell to the Eagles by just one goal, 44-43.

Griffith started the better of the two sides as they capitalise don every chance inside their attacking circle, with Hart and goal shooter Meg Signor making the Eagles pay.

But with a new defensive strategy, Narrandera began to turn the momentum of the game in their favour as they clawed their way back into the contest with a 17-goal second term.

"Their defence came out stronger in the quarter because I think they realised they had to bring it otherwise they were going to be flogged," Griffith coach Hannah Toscan said.

"Their shots were on the whole game, they really did not miss, but it was their defence in the second quarter that's what won it for them.

"It was so hard to get into the circle and Sarah was being blocked out the whole game, she basically wasn't in it."

Griffith still led 25-23 at the long break and the Swans managed to hang on to their slim lead with both sides trading goals in the third term.

But as the pressure ramped up in the final quarter, Narrandera made the most of its chances better as it clung on for the narrowest of wins.

Toscan said the side was understandably disappointed to be out of the running for the title, but said the determination shown by the side, especially by C2 grade player Taylor Chambers, was inspiring to see.

"She came up and played for us because we had so many players out and she did a really good job at wing attack," Toscan said of Chambers.

"It's always disappointing, but we were down a couple of girls. Reagan Dunlop was injured but did come on and play a bit and Jade Dillon (tonsils) couldn't play.

Centre Eilish Aird was the heart of the side, while Signor was deadly at goal shooter for most of the game.

Monique Cusack was a veritable brick wall in defence.
