HELEN Ngatikaura and her four children are the human face of Griffith's rental crisis.
The young mum has been knocked back a staggering 150 times since moving to Griffith from Sydney seven months ago.
Now she has made an impassioned plea for someone to take a chance on her family.
"I know that since the Yenda floods it's made things harder, but I feel like I'm being discriminated against for having four children and being a single mum," Ms Ngatikaura said.
"They are judging me before they even know me and it's not fair. I started applying for houses to rent
in late January. I've put in more than 150 applications and I've been denied on every occasion.
"I don't even mind where the house is. I've been out to Yenda and Whitton. I'm willing to travel, I'm used to it after living in Sydney. I've even gone into the housing commission but they knocked me back too.
"All I want is to get a house to call home and then I can make a home for myself and my kids."
Ms Ngatikaura and her children Akamoeau Lloyd, 7, Shane Lloyd, 6, Jamane Lloyd, 5, and Levi Lloyd, 1, are currently living with her parents.
"I just want a chance to give my kids a good life in our own house," she said.
"My parents encouraged me to move to Griffith because they found it so easy to find a house and settle here.
"Sydney is so busy and when I visited I could see that this was a better environment for my children.
"As much as mum and dad care I'm sure they could do with their own space.
"All I want is an opportunity. I'm clean and tidy. My kids are typical kids but I keep them under control. I can guarantee if I get a chance I won't let anyone down. I've had my hopes up a couple of times when I thought I had approval but they fell through."
Griffith Real Estate director Brian Bertolin, who oversees the largest rent roll in the city, said a lack of investor and first-home buyer confidence had helped make Griffith one of the tightest rental markets in NSW.
"It's not dire straits but the choice is certainly limited," Mr Bertolin said.
"We're in a cycle at the moment where sales are tougher but property management is booming - we'd have one of the lowest vacancy rates in the state."
