Across Australia people have been stepping up to the cause and friends Nicole Bruss and Ruby Zandona decided it was an experience they wanted to share together.
In order for the hair to be useable by wig manufacturers it needs to be a minimum of 30 centimetres long, so the rulers came out for a measurement and the girls both passed the test with flying colours.
Both girls have been personally touched by cancer, which was one of the main reasons they decided to take the plunge.
Ruby said she couldn’t remember a time when she had short hair.
“Well it was Nicole's idea to start with and we kind of wanted to do it together after talking about it for a bit,” Ruby said.
“We both had a family history of cancer, so we both kind of did it for that and also something for the community.
“We know how hard it is for people dealing with cancer so this is nothing compared to what some people have to go through. In the end it was definitely the right thing to do.
“The length they’re cutting from me will be 30 centimetres but Nicole’s is a little bit more. It'll take some getting used to that’s for sure but I like it and it's for a good cause as well which is the important thing about this.”
With the pigtails now cut off and the finalising of the process almost complete, Nicole took a moment and reflected on just why she and Ruby decided to do this wonderful thing.
“Mainly I did it because a lot of my family is dealing with cancer or have died from cancer so that was where my head was at when I initially thought about it,” Nicole said.
“I decided to donate my hair because I know it's an easy thing to go through compared to what cancer patients have to go through every day.
“I am happy that I made the decision to donate my hair and hopefully it can help some people out.
“I think I'll be brave enough to do it again, once my hair grows back that is.
“I think my new hair looks pretty good.”
When asked if she had any words for those thinking about doing something like this in the future Nicole had some inspired thoughts.
“I think people should definately do it because at the end of the day your hair will grow back, so it's not really that scary after all,” she said.
“It definately wasn’t as bad as I first thought it would be when me and Ruby decided to do it.
“Anybody thinking about doing it should really give it a go.”
