Griffith’s Joany Badenhorst defied the pain of a broken wrist to win silver in the banked slalom at the International Paralympic Committee Para-snowboard World Championships in La Molina, Spain.

Bandenhorst competed wearing a cast after suffering the break in a recent training fall but didn’t let the injury impact her performance.
The 20-year-old, who lost the lower half of her left leg in a farming accident when she was 10, clocked 1min 42.87sec to finish behind Dutch Paralympic gold medallist Bibian Mentel-Spee (1:33.41) and ahead of US rival Heidi Jo Duce (1:44.65).
Writing on her Facebook page, Badenhorst said she was thrilled to make the podium after the problems she experienced with her wrist.
“I didn't know if I could ride with my wrist today, but thanks to an amazing team with amazing support behind me I can proudly say that I am world champion runner-up in banked slalom,” she said.
The result continues an impressive run of results for Badenhorst, who only took up snowboarding in mid 2013.
The former track athlete won three silver medals and one bronze during the World Cup season to announce herself as a genuine medal prospect for the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games in South Korea.
