With 52 teams already registered organisers are confident that the Griffith area’s goal of raising $80,000 for the Cancer Council will be reached.
Hanwood resident Grant Hearn is the chairperson for this year’s Relay and is excited that the community is once again supporting this important event.
“We have 520 people registered already and the teams have raised nearly $35,000,” he said.
Mr Hearn, who has been involved since the first Relay event in 2002, estimates that there will be more than 1000 people attending.
“It’s a good way to take some of the isolation away for those who have cancer, or who have been through treatment.
“We have a candlelight ceremony at dusk on the Saturday evening and that is always a very moving event,” he said.
One of the teams participating this year is the Tayla Made team.
The team is made up of friends and family of Tayla Hirst, who was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2009.
Tayla has been in remission for five years and this will be the third year that the Tayla Made team will participate in the Relay for Life.
Tayla’s mother, Tammy, is one of the driving forces behind the team and has organised a number of fundraisers including the disco held on Valentine’s Day.
The Tayla Made team are currently leading the tally with over $4000 raised so far for this worthy cause.
The council is also getting behind the event and has lit up the iconic Nancy Blumer monument’s four sides with purple light to help raise awareness.
"Griffith Relay for Life is a wonderful community event and I would encourage everyone to get behind it and register a team,” mayor John Dal Broi said.
It’s not too late to register, visit www.relayforlife.org.au or phone 1300 65 65 85 for more information.
“Everyone is welcome to come on the day and join in. Registrations open at noon on Saturday, March 14 and the opening ceremony will be held at 3pm,” Annabel Ryan from Cancer Council NSW said.
“It’s a great event and every year we see more and more people joining in to fight back against cancer,” she said.
