TV characters need somewhere to wind down after a thankless day selling shoes, where they can argue with the kids who won't eat their vegetables and tell boom-tish jokes to a studio audience at the front of a fake set. TV is awash with shows about buying, selling and pimping houses, but the best real estate in TV land is a backdrop to stories that are more entertaining than our daily lives.
