“Firstly, I declared a pecuniary interest in that decision having had prior financial dealings with the owners of the property in the past,” Councillor Rossetto said.
“Also I didn’t want to preclude myself from any future private financial dealings with the owners.
“However, personally I couldn’t see any use for the building.”
Cr Rossetto said councillors were told the building was “selling at a very low price and it would complete council ownership of that corner of prime real estate for the future”.
He said he asked general manager Brett Stonestreet if council had an invesment property policy and the answer was no.
“In the lead up to the purchase of the clock restaurant building I privately expressed my reservations to both the mayor and deputy mayor,” Cr Rossetto said.
Council bought the building for $900,000.
