There are so many things I love about being an Aussie, but I think the thing I love most is the general acceptance that everyone is entitled to their opinion and views.
There will always be people who disagree, but the basic right to express your opinion is one that we often take for granted.
I also love the general caring nature of Australians.
You only have to look local to find dozens of examples of residents banding together to help others.
The My Name is Chris campaign is a great example of that, and Coleambally’s Sara Inggs spoke this week about the community offering support when her husband died.
Equal opportunities is another great thing about being an Aussie and education is an affordable option for everyone.
In the US, this isn’t the case.
If you work hard to achieve your dreams, anything is possible when you are Australian.
Australians are also blessed with a good health system.
It’s not perfect, but you don’t find yourself with a bill for $1000 or more every time you need to visit the emergency department.
I also love the Aussie traditions of a barbecue and I love living in a multicultural city.
I urge community members to come together on Australia Day and reflect on how lucky we are.
Take the time to reflect on the good, rather than the bad.
And try and say ‘‘g’day, mate’’ to at least one person to show you are a true-blue Aussie.
