GRIFFITH ski racer Jess Spencer is planning an assault on February's Southern 80 in Echuca-Moama after a successful year on the water.
Jess combined with boat driver Craig Parmenter to register victories in the Barry Carne Memorial Ski Race (60mph category) in Wagga and three races of the ACT Country pointscore series (70mph) earlier in 2014.
But arguably the teenager's most impressive effort was a seventh with teammate Kieran Hinck in the 70mph division at the Barrie Beehag Ski Race in Echuca-Moama last month.
Father Mark, who acts as an observer for his son with Paul Rogerson, said the Barrie Beehag result hinted that Jess could crack the top 10 in the Southern 80.
"That would be the ultimate for us getting up there," he said.
"The Southern 80 would probably be the most popular ski race in the world.
"This last year was kind of a learning curve for all of us.
"We had a few hiccups, but Craig is a bit more experienced as well. We all know a bit more about what we're doing."
Aside from great balance, Mark said skiers needed tremendous overall fitness and strength to remain upright while being towed at more than 100kph.
"It's full on," he said "To stay on that ski you've got to be super fit.
"At the Southern 80 last year it took them 56 minutes (to finish a race), which is a fair while to be on a ski.
"He (Jess) was fairly sore after that.
"It's quite draining doing that distance at that speed."
Jess said he learned every time he competed at a big event.
"I feel like I'm getting better," he said.
"I just want to finish every race I do and hopefully get better."
Mark said the ski racing community always welcomed newcomers to the sport.
"Everyone wants to help you out," he said.
"It's good like that. It's not dog eat dog or anything.
"You only have to mention you're a new team and people will start throwing you gear and giving you tips."
