NEW Yenda co-coach Tom Sellars hopes plenty of hard work over summer translates into a finals appearance for the Blueheelers in next year's Group 20 competition.
Sellars, who will share the coaching duties with Josh Curphey, will gather teammates next Thursday for the start of preseason training.
Conditions will likely be sweltering, but following the Blueheelers' seventh-place finish last season, Sellars said his team needed to get stuck in before Christmas.
"We've definitely got a team that can play finals," he said.
"We were a bit unlucky last year, but there are a few things we have to work on.
"We have to work more on our defence and also coming together as a team.
"If we can get our fitness up as well, I reckon we should be able to get into the finals."
Sellars, 23, has never coached a senior team before, but the bustling second-rower is keen to give the job a crack.
He said his familiarity with Yenda's players would help him settle into the demanding role.
"It's something different for me. I'm looking forward to it," he said.
"It's something I've wanted to do for a while.
"The good thing is that I've got a lot of mates there, so a lot of people will be helping me out.
"It'll be a lot easier coaching there than it would be if I went to another club."
Sellars and Curphey take over the coaching job from Roy Romeo.
The Blueheelers will hold a jumper presentation and meet the coach day at the Yenda Hotel tomorrow.
