GRIFFITH paid the ultimate price for a poor fielding effort to bow out of the Country Shield with a two-wicket loss to Albury-Wodonga Colts in Wodonga on Sunday.
Griffith batted itself into a strong position after scoring 229 from 50 overs before the home side overhauled the total with six balls and two wickets to spare.
It was a heart-breaking end for the Griffith players, who were left ruing a couple of dropped catches early in the Albury-Wodonga innings.
Griffith captain Paul Plummer said it was a game his team should have won.
"The match got away from us in the end," he said.
"We dropped those critical catches, and those blokes, one got 50 and one got 70.
"Dropping them early just killed us."
Albury-Wodonga won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that didn't surprise Plummer after he inspected the playing surface.
"The pitch looked terrible," Plummer said.
"It had lots of grass, and at each end there was just dirt.
"It looked atrocious, but it actually played really well compared to what it looked like."
Plummer was confident 229 would prove challenging for Albury-Wodonga to chase.
"The outfield was short and quick, but I thought 230 was a pretty good score," he said.
"But unfortunately we just let it get away from us with those dropped catches."
Connor Matheson backed up the form he showed in Griffith's opening Country Shield win against Leeton to score 77, while Simon Mackie contributed 34.
On the bowling front, Haydn Pascoe and young speedster Tom West snared two wickets each
While Griffith's Country Shield campaign is over, Plummer has more representative duties ahead of him this week when he turns out for Riverina at the NSW Country Championships (Friday to Sunday).
Griffith is hosting the southern pool of the championships, with Illawarra, Southern Zone and Western Zone joining Riverina at the event.
Plummer said he was yet to meet his Riverina teammates.
"We haven't had a training session or anything yet," he said.
"The first time we'll meet will be on Thursday arvo."
Plummer expects to be used as a first or second-change bowler.
