Woolsheds lost roofs, farm infrastructure was damaged and trees were torn down as heavy winds and drenching rain set in.
Volunteers with the NSW SES's Murrumbidgee region were called out to 11 storm-related jobs overnight.
Essential Energy confirmed more than 3000 customers from the southern region, which covers the Riverina, Murrumbidgee and Murray areas, lost power as the thunderstorms rolled through southern NSW from around 5pm.
Particularly affected were residents in Tocumwal, East Albury, Holbrook and villages in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area.
"Around 1,436 customers in Tocumwal were without supply from 5pm due to strong winds damaging powerlines. Temporary repairs were completed and the power supply was restored to all customers within two hours," an Essential Energy spokeswoman said.
"Approximately 1,586 customers in parts of East Albury were without supply from around 6.30pm due to a lighting strike to network equipment. Supply was restored to the majority of customers within an hour. Supply was restored to all customers by 9.15pm by back-feeding the local network.
"619 customers in Holbrook were without supply from approximately 7.20pm following a tree coming into contact with high voltage powerlines. Crews were able to restore supply to all customers by 9.30pm.
"Approximately 516 customers in Barellan, Binya, Kamarah, Moombooldool and surrounds were affected by a power supply interruption at around 7.30pm. Local crews were able to restore supply to all customers by around 1.30am.
"Essential Energy crews responded to a number of smaller or isolated incidents across the region during the night including in Hay, Yenda, Griffith, Goolgowi, Wagga and Wentworth."
The intense storm dumped much-needed rain right across the region, with recordings varying across the Riverina.
