Trent Ward, the owner of the vehicle, said he put posts on facebook calling for anyone to contact police in case someone saw his car, which also had a motorbike and $10,000 worth of tools on the back.
After the vehicle was spotted this morning on the way to Darlington Point, one of Mr Ward's friends, Tom Power, came across the vehicle near Almet Engineering on Lasscock Road.
"I spotted the car and started chasing it," the 27-year-old said.
"There were four people in the car, they were only young.
"One waved a knife out the window at me.
"They weren't even 18."
Mr Power said he rang his mates to inform them about the whereabouts of the vehicle and to get police to apprehend the driver.
"I followed them along dirt roads, and we went along Old Willbriggie Road and past Bagtown cemetery. We cut through someone's property and they were going up channel banks.
"They stopped a few times, trying to make me run up the back of the car.
"I thought about smashing into it or pushing them off the road, but I didn't want to trash the car."
Mr Power, who was on his lunch break from his work at Leo Franco Motors, said his adrenaline was pumping, and he started getting worried when he spotted a vehicle behind him.
"I didn't know whether it was their mates. They were holding a knife out of the window. I really didn't want to stop. You don't know what could have happened," he said.
"It was only a council car though."
But Mr Power soon found himself being chased, when police arrived at the scene.
"We had told them the stolen car was a blue ute - and my car is a blue ute too.
"I was chasing them (the alleged thieves) and the cops were chasing me.
"There was a bit of confusion for a moment."
Griffith man Jamie Burns, who came to Mr Power's aid in another car, said he was shaking throughout the chase.
"We were trying to stop the car, but we knew the kids had a knife," he said.
"It was a bit scary."
Mr Power said the wild chase came to a sudden end in an orchard between Ortella Street and Wyangan Avenue, where the car was abandoned.
Police have arrested two females at the scene, but are currently still on the hunt for two males.
