Norma and Niceo Snaidero were married 60 years ago in Italy on October 9, 1954.
Mutual friends suggested they exchange details even though they were on different sides of the world.
When Norma received a photo of Niceo in the mail it was his movie-star good looks that won her over before she even met him.
A whirlwind courtship and marriage followed before the pair headed to Australia to start their new life.
Mrs Snaidero said respect, compromise and love were the most important things for a long and happy marriage.
"I liked what I saw in the photo, he was so handsome," she said.
"He came back to Italy to visit in 1954 and I didn't have long to decide if I was going to marry him because the boat was going to leave for Australia.
"I got a certificate from the doctor for a week so I could see if I got on with him, that way I still had a job to (go) back to in case. I liked him a lot, love came after.
"For me the 60 years has gone quickly. I remember my father said to me before I left, 'you must always have respect for your husband and his family'."
Mr Snaidero, who usually lets his wife do most of the talking, said theirs was a perfect partnership.
"When she came I had the farm and we had to work hard together," he said.
"Back then when you married it was to stay that way forever.
"We spent our honeymoon on the boat. I was in one cabin with other men and she was in another with all girls and we were both seasick.
"We have had a good life together. Love and laughter are important, without them you have nothing."
Mr and Mrs Snaidero have three sons, Loris, Allan and Walter and are the proud grandparents of eight beautiful grandchildren.
