EXIES captain Marc Tucker wants his batsmen to take their time at the crease and build partnerships in tomorrow's one-day clash against Leagues Club at Exies No. 2 Oval.
Exies won their opening 40-over match of the summer against Coro by four wickets after successfully overhauling the Cougars' total of 94.
While delighted to get the victory, Tucker said Exies shouldn't have needed so many batsmen to reach the target.
"I think our batting can improve a bit from last week," Tucker said.
"We probably lost too many wickets (against Coro).
"We need to build bigger partnerships and stick around for each other if we want to get big scores."
Tucker said it was easy to feel rushed out in the middle and lose your wicket to a careless shot.
"You'd rather bat your 40 overs out than be 10 overs short," he said.
"Even if you're not scoring runs, you're making the other team stay in the field.
"If you bat your 40 overs out you generally win your games.
"If you can do that and still lose, well it's tough luck."
In a blow on the batting front, Exies will be missing the reliable Peter Burge tomorrow but will welcome back Grant Volz.
"He's a pretty good all-rounder," Tucker said of Volz.
"He missed last week, so he'll step straight in."
The Panthers will field a largely unchanged line-up from week one after starting their season with a two-wicket victory over Hanwood.
But like his Exies counterpart, Panthers captain Paul Plummer said his team had plenty of scope for improvement.
"The first week we were probably a bit scratchy all-round, especially bowling and fielding," he said.
"With the batting, we had a couple of blokes who got some good starts.
"You'd probably like one bloke to go on with it, but if you can get three or four blokes getting 30s and 40s every week, we'll be getting competitive totals."
On the bowling front, Plummer hopes teenage leg-spinner Liam Greenway can produce another big game after snaring 4-38 last week.
"He (Greenway) gets good grip on the ball, so he does turn it a fair bit and is a bit quicker through the air," Plummer said.
"For his age, he's got great control."
