THE hemlines are going south, the waists are being cinched and the name Audrey Hepburn is being bandied about that's right ladies, vintage glamour is back in style just in time for the Griffith Cup.
With the annual race meet just over two weeks away on Saturday, September 8, the city's boutiques are abuzz with Fashions on the Field hopefuls seeking out the perfect outfit.
The stakes have been raised this year after last year's Lady of the Day drew at least 60 entries.
Also, the prize pool has deepened with a $1250 travel voucher on offer for Lady of the Day, and the stage has been extended to allow more room for parading.
Renae Wynne from Griffith Jockey Club said the criteria remained the same and all five judges, including last year’s winner, would be looking for fashionistas who fit the spring style.
“This year it’s all about colour, but a lot of girls are doing the white on white,” Ms Wynne said.
“Outfits are really tailored and structured, the peplum frill is back in.”
For men, Ms Wynne said “navy is the new black”.
“Men should look for suiting with a bit of trim or something a bit different,” she said.
“And it’s really important for them to go and find a hat.”
In the spirit of spring, winter hats, coats and gloves are not allowed, but headpieces – especially for the ladies – are essential and Ms Wynne said this year they were “big”.
Frances Bordignon from Stomp boutique said lace was big on the racing scene this year.
“A lot of Audrey Hepburn and beautiful feminine styles are coming back,” Mrs Bordignon said.
“Also colour – navy is really big.”
Mrs Bordignon said oranges, greens and yellows were popular for spring, though less so in formal wear.
