About 7.45pm a 77-year-old Macarthur Street resident was shocked to find a woman in his home.
Griffith police Inspector Tony Reneker said the man left his key in the back door of his unit.
"A woman entered the premises through the rear door," Inspector Reneker said.
"She asked the victim for fuel money and then went and rummaged through some drawers in his house and removed some medication."
Inspector Reneker said the woman had "dark skin, was about 30-years-old and was wearing a black hoodie".
He reminded people to ensure they kept their doors locked.
"Keep your doors locked and don't let people in your home you don't know," Inspector Reneker said.
He said it was an unusual incident and opportunistic.
"People will take opportunities if they present themselves," Inspector Reneker said.
In June, police warned members of the public about thieves targeting the elderly.
Perpetrators were making phone calls to see if residents were home, or were acting like they were in distress, in a bid to gain entry.
On some occasions they knocked on doors at night claiming to be selling raffle tickets, before pushing the person aside and stealing items from the home.
At the time police believed a woman aged between 25 and 30 with a thin build may be able to help police with their inquiries.
He encouraged anyone with information to contact Griffith police on 6969 4299.
