John Bonaccorsi was given what he calls an "opportunity of a lifetime" after two local players decided not to take up the chance to play in what is considered one of the biggest events in the world's annual poker calendar.
Roy Catanzariti played his winning hand an ace of diamonds and a nine of clubs in a special event that earned him the option to play in the WSOP competition in Melbourne.
But the humble poker fan said for medical reasons he didn't want to take up the opportunity.
"And I thought it would be better to give a younger person the chance to play as it's an incredible opportunity," Mr Catanzariti said.
After coming second to Mr Catanzariti, Griffith man Vincent De Paoli was next in line to score the ticket to the world class event, but due to other commitments, he passed on the opportunity to Mr Bonaccorsi.
"I'm very excited, but also very nervous," Mr Bonaccorsi said.
"It' going to be very surreal when you get to play with the big guys you usually watch on TV.
The 42-year-old said while he had played big tournaments before including coming 12th in a field of 300 players in a $0.5 million tournament he had never played in a large-scale event like the WSOP.
