The initiative will subsidise navigation charges on small country air services.

Councillor Dal Broi said he hoped this would ensure Par Avion's flights to Melbourne would continue.

"While it is only $1 million to go all around Australia, any little bit will help make the Melbourne flights viable," he said.

Cr Dal Broi said he hoped the subsidy would allow Par Avion to keep the ticket prices at an affordable price.

He said the flights to Melbourne had been well received.

"The numbers are slowly increasing," he said.

"They started off pretty slowly but now they're getting up to between 55 and 60 passengers a week."

Cr Dal Broi said the flights were ideal, allowing Griffith residents to arrive in Melbourne in an hour.

"We fought very hard for this and we really want to make sure it works."

The Gillard Labor government scrapped the previous enroute rebate scheme in 2012.

The scheme prioritises linking regional or remote communities.

There are conditions, including a requirement of less than 15,000 passengers a year and the aircraft must weight less than 15 tonnes.

The subsidy is open to air carriers to apply for now.
