Less than a fortnight after a $1 million series for country-based horses was added to next year's The Championships program, a similar model for horses stemming from provincial regions was announced on Tuesday.

A series of five qualifiers will be run in a three-week window from mid-March at Kembla Grange, Newcastle, Wyong, Hawkesbury and Gosford, culminating with a $300,000 final over 1400-metres at Randwick on April 11.

The first three horses from each heat will head to Randwick on the second day of The Championships. Trainers are free to travel to as many heats, each worth $100,000, as possible in order to qualify for the final.

"It is a wonderful boost," Messara said after launching the series at Kembla alongside racing minister Troy Grant and Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys.

"The one thing missing last year was the inclusion of our regions ... the country and provincial areas. This new initiative, which we have devised in consultation with the minister and the government, I think will fill the hole."

The first qualifier will be held at Kembla on Friday 13 March, the same day as the Illawarra Turf Club's rescheduled flagship race, the group 3 Keith Nolan Classic.
