Altina Wildlife Park, located just outside of Darlington Point, has already welcomed more than 200 baby animals to the park – and there are many more yet to come.

Senior animal keeper Rebecca Surian said in the past 20 years the park had developed from a working cattle farm to a small collection of domestic animals before becoming the well regarded breeding zoo it is today.

“It all started with a crazy love for animals – one could even call it a ridiculous

obsession,” Mrs Surian said, laughing.

Today more than 45 species, including giraffes, zebras, meerkats, bison and crocodiles, inhabit the animal park.

Currently, among baby orix and hog deer, the zoo is raising a large amount of newborn animals, including two litters of maned wolf pups.

With less than 25,000 maned wolves worldwide, the species has been declared near threatened and Mrs Surian said Altina Wildlife Park was proud of their little maned wolves.

“We are the only breeder of it in Australia,” she said.

With new bloodlines from imported wolves from Sweden and Russia the zoo was working on new breeding lines among the wolves, the animal lover said.

Altina Wildlife Park is open to the public by appointment only.

The park also offers animal adoption packages in support of their fight against animal extinction.

Adoption packages start from $150 and all money raised throughout the program will go directly towards Altina Wildlife Park’s conservation and captive animal breeding program, and helps provide best care, feed and health checks for the park’s animals.
