In May she said goodbye to her beautiful grandmother Mary Matthews after a brave five-year battle with multiple myeloma.

Watching such a kind and strong-willed role model fight the disease has only made her more determined to help raise awareness and encourage others to get behind events such as Daffodil Day, which is held nationally today.

"Unfortunately she passed away two days shy of knowing her first great-grandchild Cooper Joseph Best, she tried to hold on but her body was tired and it was her time to leave us," Miss Best said.

"Her strength in dealing with the ups and downs as a sufferer is testament to the genuine intensity of character she possessed as a person and I feel a great deal of gratitude that I was able to witness such strength and humility in a human being.

"I am in debt to her for a million things she taught me, but most of all the lesson to value our time here. She once quoted to me "dream as if you will live forever, live as if you will die today Rach".

"Cancer doesn't define people, it's the strength we see as they fight that characterises the person they go on to be, in our hearts and minds.

"I applaud the continued work the Cancer Council does in assisting these fathers, mothers, grandparents and children in beating this disease, without their continued effort it would be all the more difficult to combat."

Co-ordinator for Daffodil Day Western NSW, Emma Ryall, said the day was about uniting as a community to show support to those touched by cancer and to focus on Cancer Council NSW's belief that we can and will beat cancer.

"This year we are really encouraging as many people to purchase some merchandise or a pin and wear it on Daffodil Day to show they care about beating cancer," she said.

Griffin Plaza has been promoting cancer awareness this week with Starfish Florist selling daffodil arrangements, Daffodil Day merchandise available today in front of Coles with also a head shave event lined up for this Saturday at 11am in Support of Griffith Can Assist.
