Yenda went into half-time down 14-8 before turning it around in the second half to claim victory 28-26.

The victory came at a cost when prop Damien Payne came off in the last five minutes with an injured calf and Geordie McFarlane rolled his ankle but is expected to recover in time for the next match.

Yenda’s Tom Sellars led from the front bagging himself three tries.

Yenda coach Roy Romeo was satisfied with the win but admitted his team needed to work on a few things.

“I think we just started playing footy, we made mistakes and they scored from them,” Romeo said. 

“We would defend four or five tackles and then we fell asleep at the last two.

“We fixed a few things up, we lost Damien Payne in the last five minutes, he did his calf.

“It could of went either way, the boys put in huge effort and defended well. Tommy Sellars played well, just everyone, our whole side played well.

“They scored a lot from our mistakes but full credit to them, they stuck in there right ’til the end.

“Just our structure and our quick play option, we took a step in the right direction today, just one percenters, once we get that right we’ll be fine.”

The win keeps Yenda in sixth and in touch with the top five while the Hurricanes keep seventh spot but are now four points adrift of Yenda.

Yenda has the bye next week and Bidgee takes on the Waratah Tigers at Ron Crowe Oval.
