Councillor John Dal Broi said he had been advised the cost would probably be $2 to $2.5 million, which he believed was achievable for the council.

“My personal view is we need more water because we have so many kids who go there to learn to swim and our pool is at capacity. I would be leaning towards a 50-metre outdoor pool.”

Cr Dal Broi said a number of residents at a community meeting on Thursday night said they believed a 50-metre outdoor pool was the best option.

“In an ideal world I can’t say we would be able to do it for this summer, but certainly the following summer,” Cr Dal Broi said.

“I would be disappointed if we didn’t have it for summer 2015.”

Cr Dal Broi said he believed other councillors would support a proposal for a 50-metre outdoor pool if that’s what the public wanted.

“We’ve got to go through all the submissions we receive and they close on July 7.”

Cr Dal Broi said he hoped the council would be able to inform the community of the best option within a couple of months.

He said he also believed the council should consider seeking expressions of interest from individuals wanting to run the creche, gym and kiosk at the Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre.

Cr Dal Broi said he hoped the community would support a proposal for a 50-metre outdoor pool.

“It’s something I believe 

should have been done a long time ago,” he said. Griffith’s former trouble-plagued Olympic pool was filled in more than a decade ago to make way for the Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre.

Concept plans and costings for an outdoor extension of the current indoor pool were put to the leisure centre committee in 2010 but never adopted into the 

council’s long-term strategic plan.
