GRIFFITH residents dug deep to donate about $8500 to the Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Appeal yesterday.

Salvation Army Griffith Corps Major Karen Smith said she was delighted more than 130 people volunteered their time to collect donations.
She said donations from neighbouring towns had not yet been added to the total and said it was believed the total amount would be about $12,000.
Major Smith said funds raised would help support a vast range of services, including rural chaplains in the district who visit farmers.
“We have a vast range of welfare programs including crisis accommodation, drug and alcohol rehabilitation work as well family welfare - we give out food vouchers and that sort of thing,” she said.
Major Smith thanked each and every volunteer and said she was impressed by the large number of young people who gave up part of their Sunday to take part.
Kate Simpson, 13, and Japleen Kaur, 12, said they would be back again next year.
They said they were happy to help out and planned to take part each year.
Steven Meehan-Gibbs, 17, volunteered for the first time and said he would also do it again.
