The annual Biggest Morning Tea, held at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, has been hailed a huge success – raising more than $9000 and exceeding the $7000 totals of the last two years.
Organisers Deanna Marriott and Jan Newman were up at the crack of dawn baking for the occasion and though exhausted, were delighted with the results.
With the help of dedicated volunteers and the community the event raised $9200 for the Cancer Council – and there’s more coming.
“They were lined up at the door at 9.30am to get in,” Mrs Newman said.
“We had donations coming out of our ears. It was great – the public were so generous.
“It was fantastic, our biggest morning tea for a long time – we can’t thank everyone enough.”
Hundreds of locals flocked to the club to enjoy a smorgasbord of delicious homemade treats and a cup of tea or coffee.
Mum Karen Edgcome-Lucas and her daughter Eva, 3, were among the crowd enjoying the day out for a good cause.
“I’m here with my mothers group. We usually get together on a Friday and this is our third year coming here,” she said.
“It is a wonderful event that raises awareness and vital funds. These events are so important. I lost my dad to cancer many years ago.”
Bev Armanini said she had also been coming for years to catch up with friends over a cuppa.
“I like to support the Cancer Council so they can continue research,” she said.
“Cancer is a terrible disease. We all need to do our bit to help.”
Cancer Council western region co-ordinator, Emma Ryall, said it was pleasing to see so many Griffith people get behind the morning tea.
“It is nice to see so many dedicated people,” she said.
“I know that Deanna and Jan have been doing this for 20 years, which is amazing.
“It is great to see Griffith people still get behind it. Unfortunately, cancer touches everyone.”
Nationally Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea has raised $125 million since it started in 1993.
