TOP dogs converged on Morshead Park for Sunday's Sovereign City Kennel Club show.
From toys and terriers to hounds and working dogs, they arrived from across the state to vie for the ultimate honour of best in show.
Club secretary Jill McDonald said it was competitive, with a high standard of canines.
She said the event attracted 578 dogs and more than 190 different breeds.
“The best in show was a toy dog – an affenpinscher,” Ms McDonald said.
“The runner-up was an English setter from Gisborne.”
The club stages four shows a year, but Ms McDonald said across the state there would be at least two events every weekend.
Many dog lovers were willing to travel to be a part of them,” she said.
“The majority of us start with one pet dog and you come to a show and you get hooked,” she said.
