About 10pm on Sunday night, two prime movers were travelling in opposite directions along the Mid Western Highway when they were involved in a collision.
During the collision the tipper trailer of one of the prime movers hit the cabin of the other, trapping the driver inside the vehicle.
The driver of the other truck allegedly failed to stop at the scene.
A crime scene was established and the Mid Western Highway closed while police conducted examinations at the scene.
Officers from Griffith Local Area Command are continuing their investigations and are attempting to locate the other driver and truck involved in the collision.
They are looking for the truck which has been described as being a white prime mover towing two white-coloured tipper trailers.
The Mid Western Highway is expected to remain closed west of Rankins Springs for some time.
A man, aged in his 40s, was airlifted by the Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter to Canberra Hospital with leg injuries.
The accident occurred about two kilometres west of the town and forced the closure of the highway in both directions.
According to the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS), motorists are being diverted via the Whitton Stock Route and Erigolia Road
The RMS said the diversion will add at least another 90 minutes to travel time.
It is expected the road will remain closed until at least 1pm.
A SHSC spokeswoman said the helicopter arrived at the scene about 1am on Monday and landed in Canberra at 4am.
It was the helicopter's seventh mission over the weekend.
