A man has been severely burned in a BBQ gas explosion as he prepared Christmas lunch for his family on the NSW south coast.

The 62-year-old suffered burns to his face, arms and legs at about 9.30am this morning, police said.
He has been airlifted to Concord Hospital for treatment.
Police were told the man "was preparing the family's Christmas lunch when the explosion occurred".
They are investigating reports from those present that the gas bottle to the BBQ was incorrectly connected.
The man will remain in Concord hospital for treatment, and police will speak to him about what occurred when he is well enough.
