CORO captain Haydn Pascoe is awaiting dreaded confirmation of what he already knows his season is over.
The star Cougars batsman fears he may have reinjured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee after going down hurt in an innocuous incident on Saturday against Leagues Club.
Facing Panthers paceman Luke Peruzzi, Pascoe attempted to leave a ball but felt something go on the same knee he had surgery on to repair his ACL nearly two years ago.
"I'd say I'm done for the season, which is disappointing," he said.
"The ground was a bit damp so my spikes didn't slide they were stuck in the ground and it went a bit awkward.
"I didn't fall over or anything I just felt it go. It was like my fifth ball or something.
"Then I went down and thought 'oh no, hang on a second' and then went to step up and decided to stay down. It was no good.
"It was good of the Leagues boys, they came straight over and they knew it wasn't any good."
Pascoe retired hurt on 1 and was taken to hospital, ruling him out of Griffith's SCG Country Shield quarter final on Sunday, which Cowra won by just 10 runs.
He had an ultrasound on Monday, but the results were inconclusive.
"They reckon they're not too sure because they can see all the screws and clips from when I got it done last time," he said.
"They don't know if it's old scar damage or if it's happened again."
Pascoe's injury would be a severe blow to reigning champions Coro, who have so struggled to match their dominance of the Griffith competition last season, when they claimed an unprecedented treble.
The Cougars were routed by Leagues Club after Pascoe went off injured, losing by six wickets.
But the skipper believes there is enough leadership and batting ability in the dressing room to give the Cougars hope of defending their title without him.
"Timmy Rand's pretty good, I've been under his wing for the last couple of years. He's more than capable of stepping up and doing it again," he said.
"It's a good chance for young Fletcher Josling to jump up the order, he's due for some runs and would do well with some more time at the crease.
"We've got the batting power there, we just need a couple of younger boys to take the responsibility on their shoulders and step up."
Pascoe is still rueing the fact he had to miss Sunday's nailbiting SCG Country Shield defeat, especially since the margin was so small.
"I was so pumped to go for the last couple of months."
"I feel like, losing by 10 runs, I could have made a difference - but you don't know, I could have got a golden duck and dropped six catches," he laughed.
"I was disappointed but the boys did well and hopefully next year we can get everyone keen again."
