Giuliano Lanza, who was in his 70s, was driving along Kidman Way about 30 kilometre south of Hillston when the crane left the road at 7.30pm, causing it to roll over.
Mr Lanza was found dead in the vehicle shortly after the accident.
It is believed he was driving the crane from Hillston to Griffith.
At this stage, the cause of the accident including why the crane left the road is unknown.
Crime scene investigators attended the site and police will continue to make inquiries to determine the cause of the accident.
The crane was the only vehicle involved.
It was located a short distance from the roadway, where it had rolled and come to rest.
Emergency services, including police and the Rural Fire Service, worked until 7am on Tuesday to make the site safe and recover the vehicle.
Police will investigate whether fatigue or mechanical fault played a part in the accident, with the crane to be mechanically examined.
Mr Lanza was a respected member of the community, known for his dedication to his business, Yoogali Engineering, which is now run by his sons, Chris and Marco Lanza.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
