TWO of Griffith’s brightest young talents have made history as part of the first ever NSW Country side to defeat Metro NSW at the FFA National Youth Championships.
George Pavese and Hugo Forlico were part of the under 14 NSW Country team that overcame its big city rival last week in a 1-0 win at the Coffs Harbour International Stadium.
It was a successful tournament for both Griffith players, with each getting on the scoresheet as NSW Country fell just short of taking out the championship.
Drawn as seventh seed in Group A, the NSW Country side was far from intimidated on day one, getting off to a cracking start with the win over NSW Metro, which was sealed thanks to a goal from Connor Caponecchia.
The team continued its winning streak with a 2-1 victory over Metro Queensland, but was held to a 1-1 draw with Northern NSW Metro, with attacking midfielder Forlico providing NSW Country’s goal from the penalty spot.
NSW Country went on to down South Australia 2-1 in a match in which striker Pavese opened the scoring after just five minutes.
On the same day, Victoria Metro was able to capitalise on NSW Country’s tired legs, getting up 3-0 to deliver the side’s first – and only – loss of the tournament.
The championship came down to the last day, with NSW Country and NSW Metro both equal with only one defeat apiece.
Pavese scored a double as Country secured a solid 4-2 win over the ACT, but it was denied top spot after Metro NSW prevailed against Northern NSW Metro.
Griffith was also represented in the under 13 National Youth Championships, which were held in conjunction.
Robbie Rimmer and Torren Blanch starred for Country NSW, with the former scoring in a 2-1 loss to Queensland Country and the latter grabbing a double in a 6-1 victory against Tasmania.
The under 13 Country NSW side finished in fourth position in Group B.
