How long have you worked on this garden?
I started working on the garden nine years ago. In the early days it was labour intensive clearing, planting and setting up the structures but it’s much more manageable now. I wanted to get back to nature and plant a garden that was environmentally sustainable.
What style of garden is it?
It’s an Australian native garden with flowers all year round.
What has inspired you?
We built the garden in the peak of the drought, so I was inspired to create a garden that didn’t have the classical European heavy reliance on water. It doesn’t need to be watered much, which I achieved by planting Australian natives that are all drought tolerant.
What do you get out of the garden?
I love the aesthetic of the garden. I get a lot of pleasure from tending to it and of course it’s great exercise when I have to prune it. In fact, I was just on the hedger and I’m a bit of out of breath. My family really enjoysspending time in the garden aswell.
What’s your favourite part of the garden and why?
My orchard has apples, plums, pears and citrus. Not only is it beautiful, but it keeps my family fed. I have to spray for fruit fly, but when I do we get plenty of delicious fruit.
