CHRIS Brugger is fighting for his life for the third time in five years.
This time around, the community will join the battle when a fundraiser is held in his honour.
Mr Brugger was first diagnosed with lymphatic cancer (Hodgkins Lymphoma) in 2008 and relapsed in 2011 when his son Tomas was eight-months-old.
At the time he had chemotherapy, radiotherapy and an auto stem cell transplant and despite having a minor stroke soon after, he made a relatively quick and full recovery.
Feeling fit and healthy in March this year, Mr Brugger even ran the 10km City to Lake fun run. So it came as a massive shock when doctors announced the cancer had returned in his chest and lungs.
He is currently only functioning on one lung due to a tumour blocking the other lung and started three months of chemotherapy last week.
The 33-year-old has worked at Collier and Miller for 17 years and is currently the logistics manager.
Workmate Peter Smith said he hoped the community would get behind the pizza night fundraiser at The Area Hotel on October 12 from 5pm.
"We wanted to do something before to help him but he is a fairly private bloke and he said no," Mr Smith said.
"But this is the third time around and financially, it's a huge strain.
"We'd love to see as many people as possible come along. There will be good beer, great entertainment and delicious pizzas, but if you can't come please feel free to make a donation."
Mr Brugger said it was humbling to have people offer their support.
"I was blown away when they told me what they wanted to do,” Mr Brugger said.
“It’s amazing people want to help and my wife, Naomi, and I can’t thank them enough.
“We were just starting to get back to where we did not have to worry so much financially. If people do want to help I’d be really grateful. It will be good not to have to rely so heavily on Can Assist, it will take the pressure off them. They already help so many people.”
