The current water quality in the city is the result of increased pollutants in the water after recent flooding.
However, Griffith City Council water and sewerage manager David Tull said despite the “rivery” taste, the water is still safe to drink, with the city’s water treatment plants being closely monitored.
Ritchies Supa IGA manager David Curran said in the past two weeks he had seen a dramatic rise in the demand for bulk water.
“We’ve sold way more than usual loads of it,” he said.
“We are having a bit of trouble keeping up with the demand. The 10 and 15-litre bottles have been flying off the shelves.
“It’s been a solid two weeks now and it doesn’t look like slowing.”
Rossies Supermarket’s Ross Catanzariti said he hadn’t seen anything like the current demand for bulk water before in Griffith.
“Because of the situation with the water we’ve had to bump up our orders,” he said.
“Where we normally order in cartons, we are now getting pallets in.
“There has been a big lift in water sales – the biggest is in the 10 and 15 litres. I’d say our water sales have tripled in the past couple of weeks.”
A spokesperson for Woolworths confirmed sales at both their Banna Avenue and North Griffith stores had soared.
“We have noticed an increase in both stores but mainly over the Easter long weekend,” he said.
“There’s no supply issues though, we are still getting orders in as usual and topping it up every day. If we need to, we’ll put an increased order in so that while there is a desire by customers for bottled water we can continue to meet that.”
